A Defining Feature; A Defining Moment

As a new mom, it seems that when the dust finally settles, you are still looking around for that huge windstorm to pick all that filth back up and swirl it over your head one more time.  And if by the grace of God that doesn’t happen, you start thinking about the smaller things that you didn’t have the brain power for earlier.

I always knew my daughter had a cleft chin.  I never thought about the possibility before she was born, and honestly, never really noticed it once she was out.  However, it seemed to be one of those features that people saw immediately, instantaneously asking, “Who in the family has a cleft chin?”

My husband has one- it is something that bothered him when he was much younger, but didn’t phase him once past puberty.  Though noticeable, it’s certainly something that never bothered me.   In fact, I find it endearing and sweet; a little characteristic that makes him different and a little boyish.

Now that “Birdie” is a bit older, a bit more settled into herself, our schedule slightly more set, our nights somewhat smoother, it crossed my mind:  WHAT is this little person going to look like?  Have I ever even seen a girl with a cleft chin?  Then I freaked.  And what does one do when she is concerned about something?  GOOGLE!

When I searched for “Girls with cleft chins,” tons of links came up:

-Males: Do you find cleft chins on girls attractive?
-Female cleft / butt chins, gross?
-Do girls with cleft / butt chins look good?

And then of course, I freaked out even more.  Because as we all know, Googling does nothing but intensify the fear of the unknown of whatever it is you are trying to research.  And that’s when I decided there was only one way to fix my anxiety over the future well-being of my daughter.  I bring you...
