Mama Rant: Look but don't touch!

Why do strange people think it is ok to touch my baby? This has happened numerous times, but today I almost went off on this man who felt like it was ok to touch my babies foot.

I was at the hospital checking in to see my back doctor, and this guy that apparently works in the Spine Center came over and felt the need to touch Baby M's foot. Like in this creepy stroke the bottom of her foot way. Seriously I am getting the heebie jeebies just thinking about it now.

As soon as he did it, the receptionist (this fabulous older Jamaican woman) blurts out - hey! No touch da baby! And I immediately pulled the stroller back and said "look but don't touch buddy."

I am sure he meant well (and no, he was not mentally challenged :) but I am not cool with strangers touching my baby. Do I know you? If the answer is yes, you can touch my baby's foot. If the answer is no? Step aside and admire from afar.

This happened to me when Baby M was only a few weeks old and I was in the mall giving her a bottle. Two Asian women came out of a nail salon (where they worked across from the benches I was sitting on) and came over to me and touched Baby M's foot and one even touched her cheek. I was in such shock I didn't even know what to do, except pack up and move to another bench. I was later told it was a cultural thing, but still - NOT COOL.

I also had a problem with it when I went to visit my elderly grandmother in her new assisted living center, but the woman that did it was three sheets to the wind and although Baby M was wearing head to tow pink with flower and basically had "girl" painted on her forehead she touched her foot and said "oh what a darling little boy!"

Stay tuned to my next rant about that issue...

  1. Yes! This is a pet peeve of mine too. Do people not realize that the foot frequently goes in the mouth??? So touching my baby's foot is akin to sticking your germy finger into my baby's mouth. Ew!
